  • Minimum elevation turret adjustment range  of 60 MOA or 15  MIL

In most cases, target/tactical design turrets built to be easily and externally adjustable.
Hunting Turrets:

Generally, hunting type turrets which are covered by a cap (shown below right) are not suitable for long range precision work as they are not designed for frequent adjustment. We occasionally see these turrets fail during the course. They can be used if their elevation turret has a total elevation MOA range of 47 MOA for bolt action rifles and 65 minutes of angle for AR-10/15 platforms but the turret design is not optimal and is frustrating to adjust frequently.

If your scope does not have this much range, the replacement of the scope base with a canted / corrected one piece Picatinny base with a 20 MOA correction will give you the elevation adjustment range to reach out to 700 yds.

Tactical / Target Turrets:

These turrets are purpose designed for long range work. Ergo: They are designed to be adjusted frequently and easily. See the photo below left. The settings are external and easily read. The turrets are rugged and precise, giving you the exact same elevation each time it is set to the same value.

Bipods:

  • Height adjustable, Swivel feature.

A front forearm support for the rifle is absolutely critical. A bag works well but a bipod is highly recommended. While we like Atlas bipods or Harris bipods (BRM-S models). Shooting with your reticle vertical is essential and a swivel feature allows you to very easily cant the rifle so the reticle is vertical. Look for bipods with a swivel feature.

Rear Bags:

Sufficient height (recommend 3 inches minimum when set on at least one side - 4 inches is better.
Firm but packed loosely enough to allow fine adjustments by squeezing the bag.
Rear bags are used under the stock for fine height adjustments. Typically, they are pushed, pulled, and squeezed under the rear stock to effect fine adjustments in height to establish the reticle crosshairs on the target with no muscular input required once the bag is set.

AR15/AR10 rifles:

AR15/AR10 rifle are allowed in the course, however the accurate engagement distances are much shorter than that of the comparable bolt action of the same caliber and barrel length. Please factor that in when deciding what rifle system to bring to the course. Bolt actions are inherently easier to be accurate with at extended distances. Auto loading AR15/AR10 style rifle require much more shooter input to compete with the accuracy of bolt actions. This is due to the AR15 gas system and the three different recoil impulses (vs. one recoil impulse w/a bolt action).

Bolt Action rifles:

Bolt action rifles used in the course should have the ability to quickly load and unload ammunition (magazine fed). This is not a requirement but a strong recommendation. Shooters will not be allowed to move from position to position or around the range with loaded bolt action rifles.

*** It is important that the equipment (rifle, scope, ammunition) that you are using for our events consistently meet the accuracy and adjustability requirements.  Our courses are fast paced and we don’t want you or others slowed or potentially limited by the wrong equipment.   If you have any doubt or just want to check with us, please contact us.  Once the class begins it’s harder to fix any deficiencies.
